Meet the team – Stan, Alfie, Gabs and Frankie!

Our 3rd years are leading the second round of original collaborative projects

This term, for the second year running, our third-year students are hard at work with a range of collaborative projects. These student-led projects are part of a module where they consider the writer’s role as part of a creative eco-system, and literature’s role in the creative economy through working on a collaborative project. Projects include a National Trust collaboration, a climate change series for FalWriting, an anthology of writing inspired by the work of Fine Art students and a poetry anthology highlighting climate change and endangered species.

In our sixth interview of the year, we talked to the Moonshine Magazine team about their experience so far.

Define your project

Moonshine is a printed magazine exploring Cornish culture and showcasing talent from around the county. Moonshine is a unique outlet that will offer exposure to the diverse and often-overlooked culture within Cornwall. Exploring areas such as art, surfing, traditional Cornish industries, and other topics that are intrinsic to Cornish identity.

Why did you decide to do this for your collaborative project?

Alfie: I’ve always thought that Cornwall has a distinct and exciting culture both in its history and heritage and more contemporarily in the creative industries but have often felt that it has been somewhat overlooked.

Gabs: Exactly. We wanted to provide and outlet for young Cornish creatives to publish their work and to highlight their talents and passions.

What do you want to gain?

Frankie: I want to gain skills that I can take with me after I finish my degree into the professional world, I also really want to be part of this team that essentially is creating a beautiful publication which is physical evidence of the processes undertaken and the hard work involved in creating Moonshine.

Alfie: Well I hope to come away with something I’m personally proud to have created but also to establish a successful platform for art and exciting projects around Cornwall.

What are you most excited about?

Gabs: What excites me most is the unique collaborations between amazing artists which are being produced specifically for our publication. We have been able to link up creatives with stunning results. I’m really excited for everyone to see these pieces.

Frankie: I am most excited about seeing the final product and finally seeing how it truly looks in comparison to how I have visualised it from the beginning. I am also thrilled at the prospect of enabling young people to be given exposure.

What has been the most enjoyable part so far?

Alfie: I’ve really enjoyed researching for the magazine and stumbling across artists and projects I hadn’t even heard of before. It’s really exciting because it confirms our notion that this sort of content can get a bit lost in Cornwall and that something like Moonshine hasn’t been done before.

Frankie: It has been an enjoyable experience working in a group as before this year that is not really something, as an English student, that I have been able to do before now.

What is next for your project?

Stan: The publications will be bi-annual. The things that we struggle with or fail at during this publication will be our strengths in the next. Through the illumination of diverse Cornish culture, we hope that other authors and feature artists will want to contribute and be a part of what we hope to be the start of a long and successful series of publications.

Gabs: We will be going into publication next month. In the meantime, check out @moonshinemagazine where we will be announcing a release date for our first issue and teasing some of our amazing content!
