‘Tonsillitis’ by Ella Tiller-Collins
My Body is Built of Bovril
My bones are built
of bisousuous beef paste,
not at least a dear yeast paste,
for that is my bavarois brother.
This is beef paste,
my own beef paste,
for my body is built of Bovril.
I worked at the office,
but not anymore.
culturally hated,
I could only hate,
for my body is built of Bovril.
I am no invalid,
and I am above norm.
I am fully adept,
perfect, in both colour brown and
my delicious,
bulbous forme,
for my body is built of Bovril.
Bothering in bovine businesses
are now my dealings,
bewitching and bespoke,
where I seal the deal
on diluting down donkeys
to become the broth of my blood
for my body is built of Bovril.
And yet!
my eyes cannot see,
and my mouth is just junk,
and my hands cannot feel,
and my flesh is phlegm.
I am a man made of the gunk
that sleeps at the bottom of your sink, sunk!
a man unmade of meat,
but a boy, bold and scared,
for my body is built of Bovril.
Now nobody buys my donkey bits,
So I changed my ways,
and gave it all to science.
John Lawson Johnson was the first
to taste my sick ichor.
He would study me,
love me,
and put me to cook
because my body is built of Bovril.
But my juices he did desire,
he was hungry,
an unquestioned gluttony;
my body has been taken from me,
and I write this dead,
And woefully say to you,
And those who do eat me,
I do warn thee,
That thy body is built of Bovril.
