Walking into a Margaret Atwood novel is like being in a darker, eco-Gothic, parallel universe to our own, where most things are worryingly familiar but taken a few steps further into the darkness. Leading Atwood scholar Professor Gina Wisker, of the University of Brighton, argues that the dryness of these deadly man-made worlds resulting from callous stupidity are only countered by ‘salvaging’: imagining possibilities in these worlds of the reassertion of balance between people, and between people and living things.
