'Lego Star Wars Interview' by Josh Roff

This week in Post-Digital Content, students were tasks with thinking BIG, imagining they were making a piece of hero content for an existing franchise. Hero content is the high-cost, attention grabbing, innovative content that is more likely to go viral. Taking steps to think at that level can be challenging but extremely rewarding.

Hayden Christensen walks into an interview room with a simple black chair and a poster of Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga plastered behind it. Before he sits, the interviewer, Christian Bale, greets him in his classic Batman voice. Bale is not shown.

Christian Bale: Welcome.

As Hayden Christensen takes his seat, both he and the set switches to an animated Lego format, akin to the upcoming game. He is replaced with his Anakin Skywalker model. He sits without saying anything and stares at Christian Bale, who is still not shown.

Christian Bale: Well uh… I’m glad you came. Big fan of uh… Anakin and your work. How does it feel coming back to the world of Star Wars after all these years?

Hayden Christensen: They all underestimated me. They all underestimated my power!

Christian Bale: Right… So, let’s uh… How’ve you been outside of Star Wars then, how’s your kid been doing?

Hayden Christensen: I killed them. I killed them all!

Christian Bale: What are you doing? This is a regular interview. You don’t have to role-play as Anakin.

Hayden Christensen: I see through the lies of Jedi. I do not fear the dark side as you do.

Christian Bale: Right… Can we get the next guy in?

Hayden Christensen: I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating…

Christian Bale: Yeah… hurry up on the next…

Cut to the same, real life set, but empty. Mark Hamill walks in, and takes a seat. As he does, the set once again turns to Lego, and Mark Hamill is now represented by a Luke Skywalker Lego model from the upcoming game.

Christian Bale: Hey Mark, big fan. I’ve been looking forward to having this normal interview today.

Mark Hamill: Right…good to be here.

Christian Bale: You’ve been involved in franchise recently, how was it coming back to such a beloved franchise and getting to play Luke again?

Mark Hamill: Well, I almost had to think of Luke Skywalker as another character, maybe he’s Jake Skywalker, he’s not my Luke Skywalker.

Christian Bale: There’s been a lot of controversy around the sequels, but how was working with the fresh cast of talent?

Mark Hamill: I think the characters are great and all the actors are just perfect. I wish I’d gotten to work with them more, obviously, because I was so isolated. I tried to give my creative input for the character I put a part of my life into, but we were told to ‘just read our lines’. Luke wasn’t allowed to interact with many characters, but somehow Palpatine returned. It doesn’t have to be good, it just has to make money.

Producer: Cut it. Cut it now.

Cut to the empty real life set once more. Christian Bale sighs, then scrambling is heard as he hits up straight. The camera pans over to Christian Bale finally, revealing a Lego Batman model.
