On the beautiful evening of May 22nd, we gathered in the UpperDeck at Falmouth Marina to celebrate the achievements and talents of our 2019 graduates. Marking the end of this study block and their three years at Falmouth University, it was a night of bittersweet joy and celebration of those who will soon be graduating and sailing away (see what we did there?) to their incredibly bright futures.

Amidst the glitz and glamour, our Head of Subject of English, Writing and Journalism, Dr Jennifer Young, hosted the 2019 School of English & Writing Awards and Dr Paul Springer also handed out the Director’s awards. Surprise and pride filled us all as we watched the efforts of our graduates come to fruition as they received their well deserved recognition with these awards.

Below you will find a collection of quotes and photos from the night. Take a look and reminisce with us how wonderful this evening was.

We’ve had a lovely evening celebrating the end of our degree. Food was lovely and we had a wonderful time altogether. This evening had been the best way to end our three years at Falmouth Uni! We love our lecturers, they’ve been amazing throughout the 3 years. Thank you!

Get involved, allow yourself to be challenged
— Adriana Ciontea, winner of the Outstanding Contribuition to University Life award
Ate too much – but it was good. I should’ve thought of this in advance – please give me a warning next time (uni experience, good evening – didn’t realise in a nutshell how dressy the night is.

It’s hard to summarise in one box what would happen when we all started 3 years ago with no idea what would happen. Now we are all sat here having a great time and I never want this to end. One day I hope scientists invent time travel so I can take this all again and relive these memories that mean so much to me. Thanks to all for an amazing 3 years!

Trust your instincts when it comes to writing your final piece.

Be professional – personal opinions and preferences of others should be put aside.

Get involved in things!! The more, the better. It creates a community (plus it’s good for your CV)

Make the effort to socialise with your course. Writers are introverts by nature, so make the effort to put yourself out there.

Just go with it, cos lord knows it’s all you can bloody do.
— Amy Hardman
I’m not graduating this year – I’ve got ECs – but it’s really wonderful looking around and seeing the faces of everyone I’ve known over the years, and thinking about how far everyone’s come, ready to ‘leave the nest’. Also the food is amazing.
— Lizzie Arnold
You know what you’re doing, even if other people don’t. Believe in your ideas; the things that you’re passionate about will often produce the best results, purely because you love it so much.

If you’re a woman who wants to smash their outfit choice, always wear a suit #shoutout to Amy Lilwall.

Also Laura Herbert is the most wonderful spokesperson/student rep and we love her.

And now, by your leave, we want to do a little bit of bragging…

One of the winners of the night was our very own Falwriting student team. These peers nutured the growth of Falwriting since it was established three years ago. They’ve supported its development from a blog, to a literary online magazine and a creative lab. Diligent, professional and steadfast, our team has introduced new series, an epistolary project and podcast, a range of interviews and feature articles, and a growing presence which has established Falwriting as a place to watch for creativity and writing in Cornwall and further on. Without them, Falwriting wouldn’t be what it is.

We are proud to count with their contribuition as graduates and we are delighted that they’ve won this award. Congratulations Daniella, Honeysuckle, Melissa, Amy, Maisie, Abigail and Alex!

Our own Falwriting Team, including Student Editor Daniella Ferguson-Djaba who couldn’t attend the night, also won an award. We’re tearfully proud!
