Come join us for a talk with our Xan Brooks, Writer in Residence

Xan Brooks is a renowned film critic, journalist and author of an acclaimed debut novel. In this lecture 'Authorial responsibility vs creative freedom: Whose story is it anyway?' Xan will be considering the responsibility of a writer when telling the story of a person, place or history, of which they have no first-hand experience. Is the current debate a necessary corrective, or does it risk stifling creative freedom and blunting the essential point of fiction writing?

~ Does a heterosexual author have the right to write in the voice of a gay character, or a white male author in the voice of a black female heroine?
~ Is the current debate a necessary corrective, highlighting the need for greater diversity in British publishing? Or does it risk throwing the baby out with the bath-water, stifling creative freedom & blunting the essential point of fiction writing (to make stuff up)?
