How Falmouth University Helped Land Me A Great Job by Lauren Sergi

My amazing three-year journey at Falmouth University ended in a way that I could never have predicted. 2020 was not the year that any of us had planned. If you’d told me that despite all that 2020 had to throw at us, that I’d graduate with First class honours in English with Creative Writing and land a great job in marketing the same year, I would have laughed.
However, in November 2020 I was successful in securing a job as Marketing Officer for my local sixth form college. I have subsequently been told that all the extra experience I gained whilst at Falmouth Uni gave me the skills they desired for the role.
When I first arrived at Falmouth, I was considering a career in publishing. My first voluntary social media/marketing role was a publishing collaboration between Falmouth University and the National Trust. We promoted Holly Corfield Carr’s new poetry anthology. I had not considered marketing before but found this role very exciting. I enjoyed liaising with a variety of people and creating engaging and relevant content.
This led to a similar voluntary role as part of the university’s social media team for Young and Talented Cornwall. A charity that helps talented young people achieve their dreams. This gave me a valuable insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of a social media assistant. I learnt how to schedule posts on social media, produce narratives for content and market events to the general public. All of these skills I have since utilised in the workplace. Throughout my time volunteering with Young and Talented, I also met many inspirational individuals who worked in the industry.
I was also a paid Digital Ambassador for Falmouth Uni in years 2 and 3. Having paid digital marketing experience also paved the way to pursuing a career in the industry. I thoroughly enjoyed writing articles for university students such as - things to do in Falmouth and how to cope with exam stress. My articles were featured on Facebook. I also created live posts during events such as Open Days.
All three roles took place alongside my university studies and played an integral part in helping me land my current job. I am very grateful for the selection of extra opportunities that Falmouth offers its students and would encourage current students to get involved, because you never know where opportunities will lead you. Employers are always looking for proof of genuine interest and commitment.
