In this fifth submission to the Post-Digital Writing Summer Showcase, students on the Post-Digital Content module were tasked with responding to the form of a virtual reality (VR) film pitch. A Room of Fashion

VR Form Strength: Gets people to engage with a subject they might not normally

Main Outline:

A VR experience which takes the viewer through the history of fashion around the world. The viewer is put in a ‘room’ with people from different time eras and gets to learn about the clothes being worn in that room. To examine a piece of clothing the viewer must look at a person for a certain amount of time and then the information will be listed beside them. To move onto the next period of history a determined number of people must be examined in the room. With a 360 degree viewing experience the audience can also see their surroundings and observe the area they are in. The rooms include Ancient Greek temples, 18th century ballrooms and many houses.

From Ancient Greece to the Regency Era to the development of the qipao, the viewer will be able to learn about all kinds of clothing in the periods they were worn.

Reason for using VR:

It is difficult to engage with fashion of multiple eras in one space, most exhibitions of fashion are divided by era and spread far over the world. By making this film VR the audience is able to see and learn about all fashion in one place, making this part of history more accessible to a wider audience. This experience is greater than learning from a book or documentary as it allows for a higher amount of engagement, making the information easier to digest.
